Recently, I’ve come to the determination that I have a problem. What kind of problem you ask? A shopping problem. I visit deal blogs, coupon blogs, and shopping blogs a lot. Ok. Not just a lot. Every day. Multiple times a day. I’m officially a shopaholic.

About 2 weeks ago, I told myself I wasn’t going to buy anything I didn’t really need. I want to save some money, and it’s tough for me, because I tend to fritter it away on little things I don’t really need. I think my worst offense is buying clothes. I have clothes that in the moment I couldn’t live without, that I’ve not only not worn, I’ve never even taken them out of the package.

The one nice thing about that is, I always have an assortment of nice clothes to choose from if I find myself sucked into some kind of social engagement. I’m never scrambling to find a new dress, or a nice sweater. They already live in my bedroom, still wrapped, with the tags still on them, waiting for their moment to shine.

So it took me about, oh, 4 days into my don’t buy anything challenge for one of my favorite stores to have a sale. I put a bunch of stuff in my cart and then saw the $300+ price tag and laughed at myself. Throughout the day, I kept finding myself back at that site trying to decide what I “really don’t need” and whittled it down to under $100 and pulled the trigger. Now I have a new box of stuff sitting in my room. Oops.

One thing I make sure I do before I actually purchase anything is do a search for coupons. Sometimes I luck out and find one, but generally the stores I shop at, just run sales, or I earn money off through a loyalty program. But there’s a way you can save a little bit extra on just about everything. What’s this magical secret you wonder? It’s a site called Ebates.

All I have to do to use Ebates is to go to their site and search for the retailer I’m about to purchase something from. Generally they’ll give me a varying amount of cash back on my purchase. Today’s impulse buy from my favorite clothes store earned me 4%. Each retailer has a different rebate amount, plus they sometimes do bonuses, where you can earn even more when you shop!

While it’s not an earth shattering amount, if you shop way more than you should, like me, it starts to add up quickly! Every 3 months, they send you a check or a Paypal payment for the amount you’ve earned. I have my account set to send me Paypal. So every few months, I have a couple extra dollars to spend on things I shouldn’t be buying.

If you aren’t already signed up for Ebates, I highly recommend it. It really comes in handy around Christmas time when I’m shopping like a crazed person all over the internet. In today’s day and age, a penny saved, is a penny earned, still holds true!

So give them a try. I’m certain you won’t regret it!
